Exam, Cleaning, X-rays... It's All Part of Your Dentist Visit
Are dentists supposed to only look at your teeth and smile during your bi-annual dental exam, cleaning and xrays? Simply put, no. A well trained and proactive dentist will look at much more than just tooth after tooth. At Millbrae Dental Care we take the different and proactive approach to your visits. If you are new to our office we start with a full set of digital xrays (much safer), run through a review of your oral and overall health history, and discuss any concerns or areas of your mouth you'd like us to take a special look at.
From there we make sure we understand your personal goal for your smile, oral and general health. We've found that many of our patients have wanted to straighten their teeth with invisalign, whiten their smile with laser whitening, or just replace their old metal mercury metal fillings with white fillings. We also find many of our patients suffer from TMJ pain or Sleep Apnea - all of which we can help them with. We just never know what our patients are thinking about.
How to avoid Crowns, Bridges, Rootcanals etc.
So why do we take x-rays every year? To see in-between your teeth and inside your tooth and roots. While we’re cleaning your teeth and performing the oral exam we can only see what is happening on the outside of your teeth.
We use our high resolution digital x-rays to look in between and inside your teeth. We’re looking for cavities, abbesses, and any other unusual or potentially harmful issues. Many of which can lead more severe dental problems such as crowns, bridges, and root canals. We believe it is best to stay ahead of the problems, saving you pain, discomfort and money.
We review your dental health as well as your overall health goals
Diet, exercise, stress levels a work, home, your last visit with your primary care physician, etc. all play into our overall health assessment. Many people don’t realize that your oral health and dental hygiene is directly related to your overall health. Studies have shown that periodontal disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes and even depression symptoms. Leading doctors have shown that the position and health of your teeth and gums is directly related to TMJ pain, migraine headaches, sleep apnea and neck back and shoulder pain. And all of the above influence how well you sleep, whether you snore or not and how severe sleep apnea is. The fact is, a well trained dentist will look at more than just your teeth during your exam. Below are a few of the speciality areas of dentistry that I provide to you, my patient.
